TAFE

Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions offer vocational courses that can lead to certain job prospects or serve as a pathway to university. TAFE is more accessible than university as it is not required to complete high school and is more cost efficient. TAFE generally offers more hands-on learning providing core skills to be ready to work in industry

Australian Defence Force Academy

The Australian Defence Force Academy provides options to complete military training to become an Officer in the Navy, Army or Air Force and the option to complete a degree at the same time.

Completing a scholarship with the ADFA allows you to study a job-relevant degree at your choice of university, join the ADF, have study fees pain and earn a salary while studying.

Entering the Workforce

Before you start looking for work, develop a standard resume with the essentials - personal details, education, experiences. Later, when you find jobs of interest then tailor your resume to suit the criteria required of the vacant position.

There are many services that can assist you in building and/or tailoring a resume. If you are a student, your institution of study e.g. university, school will likely have a career service available to review your resume. However, if you are not studying, you can seek assistance from an employment services in your local area.

Preparation documents

Upon hire, employers will provide you with onboarding documents that may ask for your payment, tax and working rights details. To ensure a smooth process, the following should be completed in advance:

  • Open an Australian bank account so that your employer can deposit your earnings
  • Apply for a Tax File Number (TFN) from the Australian Taxation Office to ensure you are taxed at an appropriate rate.
  • Be familiar with the pay and conditions for your area of employment – Fair Work Ombudsman.
